Tra Nhieu lies about 17 kms to the southeast downstream from Hoi An. It is one of the few villages still retaining Vietnamese rural features. Most of villagers still live by old-aged traditional occupations passed down from previous generations; most typical is the traditional sedge mat weaving, and fishing in both the river and sea. The local life does not depend much on machines; most tasks are performed by hands and at the will of nature.
In seventeen century, Tra Nhieu used to be a crowded habour where trading boats from all over the world came and tranferred goods to Hoi An. However, due to annual flooding traders were afraid Tra Nhieu could not continue and they develop Hoi An as a variable port. Due to the many wars, all that is left of Tra Nhieu that proves the existence of this once busy foreign trading port is the ancient well.
