The Orinoco Delta is located in northeastern Venezuela. The Delta provides an excellent opportunity to learn about different ecosystems. You will visit Indian villages, explore countless channels admiring the lush vegetation and varied fauna and enjoy a walk in the swamp forest.
Day 1: Ciudad Bolivar — Orinoco Delta (L/D)
From Ciudad Bolivar you will drive about 3.5 hours to Boca de Uracoa, a small river port in the Orinoco Delta. From Boca de Uracoa you will be transferred to the Abujene Lodge by boat. During this trip, which lasts from 1 — 1.5 hrs, you will already get an impression of the flora and fauna endemic to this area. After lunch you will take your first excursion in the surroundings. Overnight in double rooms with private bath.
Day 2: Excursion (B/L/D)
After breakfast we take a boat with which we work our way through the branches of the river, bordered by dense tropical rainforest. We can see monkeys, birds and other animals. We might see fresh water dolphins and observe monkeys and a variety of birds like toucans and parrots.
On a small river branch we get off the boat. In rubber boots we step upon swampy ground and walk into the delta forest. There we get an insight of the typical vegetation, e.g. the Moriche palm-tree, the Indians «tree of life» and its multiple uses. We taste the heart of the Manaca palm-tree, which only grows in the delta and we visit one of the Warao Tribe families which live in their huts built at the sides of the rivers. These Indians also make beautiful handicrafts.
At night there is a chance to take an optional excursion with a small paddle canoe, to flash a light at the eyes of alligators resting at the river sides and watch some python snakes sleeping rolled up on the trees. Overnight in double rooms.
Day 3: Back to Ciudad Bolivar (B)
After breakfast drive by boat to Boca de Uracoa and from there your transport will already be waiting to take you back to Ciudad Bolivar.
