Skagway Shore Excursion: Yukon Territory Day Trip

Experience the breathtaking wilderness of the Yukon Territory as well as southeast Alaska and British Columbia on this day excursion from Skagway. You’ll see examples of the region’s animals at Caribou Crossing Trading Post’s wildlife museum and also meet the lovable husky pups in training for Yukon Quest and Iditarod dog sled races. With plenty of stops along the Klondike Highway for amazing scenery, you’ll get great pics of the abundant natural wonders in the Yukon.

When your ship docks in Skagway, take a day tour by minicoach along the scenic Klondike Highway and across the border into Canada. Parallel to the White Pass railroad constructed during the 1898 gold rush, the road follows the railway tracks but driving allows you to stop at magnificent viewpoints along the way. You’ll hear from your expert guide about those who arrived in Skagway during the boom times of the gold rush.

Crossing into Canada, you’ll pass through the Northern Boreal Forest, then continue by several lakes. You’ll have time for a photo stop at the Yukon border, before continuing to Lake Bennett and picturesque Emerald Lake.

Near Emerald Lake, your group will stop at Caribou Crossing Trading Post for lunch and several activities. Lunch will be served Yukon-style and will include baked chicken and barbecue sauce, a vegetarian lentil soup option, rolls, coleslaw, baked potato, as well as homemade donuts and coffee.

After your lunch, you’ll have about an hour to explore the options at Caribou Crossing. You can check out the Yukon Wildlife Museum’s amazing taxidermy animals, from Ice Age beasts like the wooly mammoth to present day wildlife such as wolverines, caribou, and bear.

Be sure to see the dogs at Husky Village — these canine athletes are in training for the Iditarod and Yukon Quest dog sled races! Learn tales from the mushers about dog sledding in the Yukon and see how they work with the pups. You might even be able to pet the dogs and play with the puppies! If you like, choose to take a ride on a dogcart (own expense).
