Your adventure starts when we pick you up at your hotel in a very comfortable, air-conditioned van. You will pass through the famous Las Olas Shopping district on your way to Fort Lauderdale’s Sailboat Bend community. Disembarking you will stroll along the New River waterfront in downtown Ft. Lauderdale. Historically rich, this area will be brought to life for you.
As you walk along the New River brick trail Michael will tell you how the Everglades were formed some five thousand years ago and how it feeds the New River and about the early inhabitants that struggled along its banks. You will learn about the Seminole Indian Wars and their impact on the community, and how one family suffered with their lives.
You will learn about how two resourceful ladies from Miami induced a reluctant Henry Flagler to extend his railroad, the FEC from Palm Beach to Havana Cuba via the Over Seas Railroad.
The tour culminates at the Historical New River Village where you can visit the first inn in Fort Lauderdale. Built in 1907 the New River Inn sits along side the original railroad tracks that Henry Flagler brought through in 1895. Today the Inn has been preserved and is the home of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society. The second floor contains a museum with fascinating artifacts. Adjoining the Inn is the King — Cromarte House built in 1907, and a replica of the first school house what is now called Fort Lauderdale.
