Architectural Odessa

Odessa, the southern Palmyra, is famous first of all for its remarkable architecture. In Odessa you can admire its palaces, yards, houses and streets. Because they all compose a unique ensemble of different architectural styles. From the first days of its existence the city was being built under the guidance of talented engineers and architects. The city planning became one of the greatest urban planning achievements of classicism. The author, an engineer F. P. Devolan, used the area topography very well, taking into account the climate conditions and creating an expressive compositional housing. The classical style and monumentality, dominant at the beginning of the 19th century, were the distinguishing feature of the first large buildings in the city, as well as the Italian character of the architecture; the latter can be explained by the fact that the first architects and artists in Odessa were Italians: Frapolli, Dalaqua, Torrichelli, Boffo, Morandi and others. A wide spreading appeared for «modern» style, in which Odessa architect G. Linetskiy was working. You will also find remarkable patterns of baroque, renaissance, gothic. Clear and correct outlines of the city give pleasure to everyone who visits the Southern capital!
