Women and youths in communities in Busoga region, particularly Jinja and Kaliro run small income-generating activities which many have nurtured for years with negligible growth. Lack of business education and absence of funds to invest in their businesses have resulted in stagnant growth, ensuring that efforts put in by the women produce little fruit as the women are still unable to meet the financial needs of their families. Women acknowledged that they do not have the business skills or capital to run their businesses successfully and as such cannot meet their most pressing household need, paying school fees for their children.
These are vulnerable females, young mothers, grandmothers, some of whom are widows, with many dependants to care for, and women living with HIV/AIDS – all women of little means who cannot fully support their families because of insufficient earnings. There is a considerable need across this vulnerable group for business training and to secure a source of adequate income through their own efforts so they may improve the welfare of their families and become empowered members of society. Volunteers can help these women by training them in:
