Vocational skills training in Uganda

In Uganda, successful Vocational Training is not how many people we can train in a year, or in how short a time we can carry out the training.  Neither is it in how attractive a certificate we produce to give a graduating student on completion of the course. It is simply in the providing of a set of tools or a sewing machine to enable the graduating student to become more proficient in their newly acquired skills, and to be able to use them in supporting themselves and their family by putting a roof over their heads, food on the table and educating their family and providing medical care.

Volunteers will provide;

• Training of practical skills such as carpentry, sewing, or shoe repair, computer training, knitting, baking and home economics
• Providing youth with resources such as sewing machines, carpentry tools and computers
• Organize and conduct training workshops with youth who are both in school and out of school
• Network with community leaders to gather resources.

A lot of volunteers who would love to directly engage in community based training how ever putting into consideration the target groups who are mainly youth out school the lessons are made in a simplified visual manner to aid the learners understand the basics of the different skills availed to them.

Under this arrangement other relevant basics like marketing and business management are given top priority and volunteers are required to come up with manuals that suit the learners. Constant monitoring of the projects progress is carried out to identify gaps and challenges to be addressed.
