The Whirling Dervishes ceremony, also known as Sama, is a combination of rituals performed by the followers of the 13th-century Sufi mystic and poet Rumi and represents the esoteric journey of man's spiritual ascent to find the truth through love and to ultimately arrive at his spiritual perfection. By means of the rituals, which include playing instruments, chanting, dancing, and recitation of prayers, he reaches maturity and becomes a man of nondiscriminating service to creation as a whole.
This is a contemplative show noted and enjoyed for its authentic performance and for the architectural grandeur of its venue. Preceded by a multimedia presentation featuring the highlights of Cappadocia, the Whirling Dervishes ceremony takes place in the historic Sarıhan Caravanserai, a prominent 13th-century roadside inn, with a sizable courtyard, for the overnight accommodation of groups of long-distance travelers.
