The Archaeological Museum of Istanbul was Turkey’s first museum and has been awarded the museum of the year prize by the Council of Europe. It consists of four sections in four buildings. It houses the famous Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great and priceless artefacts from the Archaic, Classical, Hellenistic and Roman eras. There is also a vast collection of coins. The New Building, which opened in 1998, has magnificent exhibitions of Trojan and Anatolian cultures. There is also a fascinating section on Istanbul. The third building has remarkable works of art from Mesopotamia. There are artefacts dating from thousands of years ago. Delve into the histories of Sumerian, Hittite, Acadian, Babylonian and many other civilisations, all of which helped develop European culture. A splendid guide will ensure you enjoy this magnificent museum.
