This route created the myth that Kilimanjaro is in Kenya. It was formerly used by the East African Outward bound school to train climbers. Some years back it was being used illegally by visitors from the Kenyan border to climb the Mountain there by leading to the misconception that Kilimanjaro is in Kenya. It is a gentle climb right from the beginning and commences from the Kenya and Tanzanian border at 1600m above sea level.
DAY 1:
Rongai gate at 1600m to Forest camp at 2250m above sea level.
DAY 2:
Forest camp 1 to cave II at 3800m above sea level; approx 3- 4hrs
DAY 3:
Cave I cave II at 3800m above s/I; approx 2 – 3 hrs
DAY 4:
Cave II to the Outward bound school hut at 4750m above s/l; approx 6 – 9hrs
DAY 5:
Outward bound Hut to Uhuru peak – the summit at 58896m above s/l; approx 6 -9hrs summit to Kibo at 4703m above s/l; approx 3hrs
Lunch and a short break before descending to Horombo hut for Dinner and an overnight stay.
DAY 6:
A walk out day from Horombo to Marangu gate; approx 4 – 5hrs via Mandara Hut Drive back to Arusha; approx 21/2 hrs
