Joan Miró is one of the 20th Century's greatest artists, a man deeply rooted in his homeland but at the same time with a truly worldwide reputation. The Fundació Joan Miró houses the world's most complete collection of works by Miró. The building itself is located high on Montjuic Mountain with stunning panoramic views over the city and also contains a wide variety of creative works by other artists.
This beautiful building was built specifically to house Miró's work by his friend, the Catalan architect Josep Lluis Sbert. It was planned as a new way of viewing the concept of a museum and how the people of Barcelona could relate to their city's cultural heritage. This airy construction, flooded with the pure Mediterranean light Miró loved so much, strikes a perfect balance between architecture and landscape.
The collection consists of over 10,000 items including paintings, sculptures and ceramics as well as an extensive library and collection of documentation. Do not miss this chance some of Miró's most celebrated work.
Of particular interest is Espai 13, a space dedicated to showcasing the work of young experimental artists as well as pieces by Greenaway, Chillida, Magritte, Rothko, Tapies and Saura.
