Come with us spend a day in another continent. Tangier is situated just across the Straits of Gibraltar but this cosmopolitan port city will seem a world away. Exotic, mysterious, home to spies, artists, shady diplomats and businessmen on the make with beautiful vistas, unspoiled beaches, and friendly people, Tangier is an interesting mix of North Africa, Spain, Portugal and France. We'll tour all the main sights and there will also be time for you do explore on your own.
We’ll start with a walking tour of the Petit Socco, a vibrant colourful street bazaar. Here we’ll visit different markets selling spices, dried fruit and vegetables before we head to the Jewellers’ Bazaar where you’ll learn all about the fascinating Moroccan wedding rituals.
Next we’ll venture into the winding alleyways of the Medina, the old town of Tangier, filled with cubbyhole shops, bakeries and tailors, with the locals wearing their chillabas, it’s like stepping back to medieval times. The area is dominated by the impressive minaret of the Kasbah Mosque, dating from 1230. We’ll stop to visit a snake charmer and enter one of the local bakeries to taste some delicious freshly baked bread.
After a traditional lunch in a typical Moroccan restaurant we’ll visit a bazaar where you will have the opportunity to snap up some of the excellent local handicrafts including delicately worked carpets and rugs.
From here we’ll go on a bus tour of the sophisticated modern city, heading along the sea front promenade, passing the Portuguese, American, Italian and Spanish quarters and the Royal Palace as we head for the Atlantic coast. On the way we’ll stop at Roman Necropolis where you can enjoy some stunning views across the straits to Gibraltar.
From here we’ll make the climb to Cape Spartel the point where the waters of the Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea meet. Enjoy a refreshing mint tea as you learn all about the fascinating rituals associated with the national beverage. Below the promontory are the Caves of Hercules, a cavern system inhabited since prehistoric times and believed to be the entrance to a mysterious tunnel passing under the Straits, emerging at St. Michael’s Cave in Gibraltar.
The tour will end with a visit to the impressive dune system facing the wild Atlantic. Here you can go for an optional camel ride or spend some time relaxing on the sand before we head back to Tangier through some of the city’s affluent suburbs.
