2. Sunny Winter – Excursions -                                                        To get around…

Visit the Cities of Almeria and Granada with the Alhambra-Palace and enjoy the panoramic views of the African-like, unspoiled coast and the white villages of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata.

Day 1: Arrival

After your arrival in Malaga we will drive about 1:30h to Granada to our Hotel in the city center.  After a short break in the Hotel we will explore Granada by foot, see the historical center, the famous quarters of Albayzin  and Sacromonte and enjoy the panoramic view from San Nicolas Place over the Alhambra in front of the snowed Mountains of Sierra Nevada.

In the evening you will have supper in a typical Tapas-Bar, offering infinite specialties of the local kitchen.

Day 2: Granada and the Alhambra Palace

This morning is exclusively reserved to the “must-see” of Andalusia: the Alhambra and its Arabic palaces. The fortified Village (the “Medina”), the Castle  and the Puppet-house –like Sultans palaces let you remind the  1001 Night-tales and introduces you to the 800 years lasting Moorish history of the south of Spain.

The afternoon we take the highway to Almería, we cross grand variety of landscapes as the northern- like cedar and pine forests of Huetor-Sierra, the sandstone canyons with infinite little cave houses of Guadix and the desert of Tabernas which has been a famous Film Spot of Italo-Western in the ´70th , before we finally reach the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata and San José.

You are lodged in the “Hotel Agades” which is a small, charming, family-owned Hotel 300m from the beach.  All rooms are equipped with bath, heating, air condition and Sat-TV.

The village of San José is located in the center of the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata-Nijar, provided with a marina and all essential services as Banks, Pubs, Restaurants and a variety of shops.

Day 3: The House of the Volcanoes and the Botanical Garden of Rodalquilar.

 

As a first approach to the Natural Park of Cabo de Gata you´ll visit the House of the volcanoes which introduces in the geological history and the mostly volcanic and underwater origin of the area and a its mineralogical fame given by the Gold an Potassium-Alum-Mines.  After the visit of the Museum we have a little walk through the nearby Botanical Garden which offers all the variety of the rare flora of the semi desert of

Cabo de Gata.

The Valey of Rodaquilar is formed by a volcanic caldera which ends on the beach of “el Playazo” surrounded by cliffs formed by fossil Dunes, an ideal place to stay and take our Pick Nick. On the way back to San José we´ll Stop in the fisher’s village of “La Isleta del Moro”  and visit the fort San Felipe  XVIII. Ct. before reaching San Jose late afternoon.

Day 4: Nijar – Fernan Perez and the Lighthouse of the Wolf- Tower

(Torre de los Lobos)

Nijar is the Chief town of most villages of the Natural Park and known for its handcrafted rustic carpets pottery and esparto-grass weaver. We visit this almost Arabic looking town and the Water Museum before we reach the small village of Fernan Perez where the local traditional kitchen is still alive. After lunch we drive up to the lighthouse of the Torre de los Lobos which is 280m above sea-level offering a panoramic view over this eastern-cliff-coast of Cabo de Gata.  Originally it was a watchtower of the moorish dynasties from Granada but after its destruction it has been rebuilt in the XVIII. cent.

Day 5: Beaches, Cliff Coast and Flamingoes

A day of panoramic views: The coastline in the west of San José offers the nicest unspoiled beaches of the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. The View over the volcanic caldera of Genoveses with its sandy beach of 1,5Km  within a Mexican-like landscape of Cactus and Agaves and the dunes of the Beach of Monsul are splendid photo-objects in the morning light. We follow on the sandy track through a natural reserve which is closed to general public and reach the highest point at “Vela Blanca” where we enjoy the best Panorama over the Cap from Cabo de Gata.

We reach the artificial Salt March (Salinas) of Cabo de Gata where usually are hundreds of Flamingoes and take some time for bird watching at several places. After having Pick Nick near the salt marches and a break in the village of Cabo de Gata we will go to the visitors center of the Natural Park before going back to San Jose.

Day 6:  Almería (The last three days are the same in Program 1. Hiking… and 2.  Excursions…)

On our tour through the historical city of Almeria which has been one of the last refuges of the Moors in Spain you see the particular fortified late-gothic Cathedral and visit the “Alcazaba” – the Arabic fortress of Almeria which offers an infinite panoramic view over the golf of Almeria and the city.  Walking down to the city center youoptionally may want to spend the rest of the morning in a relaxing Arabic-bath, the “Hammam” “ Aire de Almería” is a recovered historic bath making  you enjoy the benefits of a thousand-year-old tradition across the senses.

If you prefer to keep on exploring the historical city you may follow the guided tour through the classic shopping quarter of the city and visit the Olive Oil Museum to see the historic art to extract the juice of Olive fruit and taste a variety of olive oil.

For lunch we rejoin the group and have some “tapas” which is a variety of little dishes of the local kitchen in a typical Tapas-Bar.

Day 7: Malaga (The last two days are the same in all programs.)

You´ll reach Malaga before midday and enjoy the vivid city-center. We recommend the visit to the Picasso-Museum or the natal house of the artist where the Picasso-foundation offers several collections.
