MASCA THE KING

Feel like a day away from the beach? Want to see another side to this beautiful island. Then this full-day tour of Tenerife's unspoilt north west is just what you need. Think hidden villages out of a fairy tale that time seems to have passed by, lush valleys, fields of lava and a rugged coastline battled unceasingly by the Atlantic breakers. We'll also visit the 1000 year old Dragon tree at Icod de los Vinos and sample some local wines at a local winery.

The adventure starts on the beautiful coast road as we drive through the picturesque settlements of Los Silos and Buenavista before we start our climb up into the Teno mountains heading for our first destination, the quaint village of Masca. Tucked away amidst lush mountain slopes at 700 metres above sea level, this fairytale village consists of a scattering of higgledy piggledy houses perched on a series of volcanic ridges overlooking the wild Atlantic ocean far below.

Here there will be time for you to explore or to have some lunch before we head for Garachico, an important trading centre, exporting Malvasia wine, before its destruction by lava in 1706. You'll have time to explore this old town with its old-fashioned houses, cobbled streets and sunny plazas . Our final stop is the pretty town of Icod de los Vinos, famous for its thousand year old dragon tree with its blood-red sap and magical properties. Other attractions include the charming church of San Marcos. We'll get to sample some of the famed local wines and liqueurs at the Cueva del Rey winery.
