Take in some art and culture on your Los Cabos vacation and experience the local lifestyle. Spend an evening out in the art district of San Jose and explore various popular art galleries (glass in hand!). After browsing the various showrooms and exhibits, head out to one of the best "Alta Cocina" (gourmet Mexican cuisine) restaurants in the area for a delicious and traditional Mexican meal.
San Jose is a relaxed and traditional Mexican town graced by its renovated main plaza, the old Mission dating back to the 1730s and the historical hacienda-style buildings housing colorful galleries. Art galleries in San Jose tend to be concentrated on two streets which traverse the main sections of town.
During the months of October through June, the "walking art" experience takes place and many galleries are open to display their beautiful work. Have a stroll around and enjoy fresh appetizers and wine. A few of the popular galleries include:
Galeria de Ida Victoria: Original works of art and custom frame studio
Old Town Gallery: Mexico through the eyes of the artist
Pez Gordo: An unusual collection of emerging artists from Los Cabos
Dona Pitahaya: A window to customs and traditions of the Huichol culture
Casa Don Pablo Gallery: Custom iron work, woodcarving and local history photographs
Soraya Art Gallery: Local art, paintings, murals, faux finish and trompe-l'oeil
Kaki Bassi: "My work is based on the cave paintings from the original Indians and the universal symbolism that work conveys", says Bassi
After the tour of the art district, get ready to enjoy a succulent dinner at one of the most popular restaurants in town. Mexican chefs are renowned for their ability to take the simplest of ingredients and transform them into works of art. Reinterpreting pre-Hispanic dishes using modern techniques and new ingredients, their cuisine is known as "Alta Cocina" (gourmet Mexican cuisine).
