La Rambla and Gothic Quarter walking tour

Ramble down Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter to explore the area that has been heart of Barcelona since time immemorial. Lose yourself in the labyrinthine streets. Be mesmerised by historic little plazas, offering shade from the blistering sun. Marvel at the medieval churches, the renaissance and baroque palaces. This is the Barcelona that has captivated visitors since Roman times.

Live and breathe the Barcelona lifestyle, one of the most admired in the world. Every charming corner and narrow alley has a thousand stories to tell.

Begin your adventure at the Plaça de Catalunya, the ‘meeting point’ of Barcelona. Wander down La Rambla de Canaletes, the first of the five stretches that make up the 1.2km-long Las Ramblas. This beautiful boulevard covers a stream that was covered up centuries ago, hence its winding nature. Stroll into the narrow Petritxol lane towards the Gothic basilica of Santa Maria del Pi and to Sant Felip Neri square, which is named after a baroque church whose façade is still pockmarked by the scars of war.

See the Gothic cathedral of Santa Eulalia, with its fearsome gargoyles and take in the grandeur of the Plaça Reial, which still has the street lamps designed by Gaudi. Pause on Paradis street to admire the remains of the Temple of Augustus before arriving at the palatial Plaça Sant Jaume, where the city hall and regional government have their headquarters.

Explore El Call, which was the Jewish until their expulsion from Spain in 1492, before heading back to Las Ramblas and the Boqueria market.
