No visit to Granada would be without a visit to the Alhambra. This beautiful palace complex is the culmination of centuries of Islamic art and architecture in Moorish Spain, the flowering of a unique culture. This guided tour in the company of an expert in the history and artistic and cultural heritage of the Alhambra will really bring this stunning building to life. This magical city has a lot more to offer, however. Visit the monuments built by the Catholic conquerors in the city centre and explore two of Granada’s most charismatic neighbourhoods, El Albaicin and Sacromonte.
The Alhambra is located on a hill overlooking the city. It was originally built as a fortress in 899 before being converted into a Royal Palace by Yusuf I, Sultan of Granada. Your knowledgeable guide will show you around the old fortress, known as La Alcazaba, the Royal Palace Complex with its Harem, the Court of the Myrtles with its large pond used for cooling the buildings in the summer heat, the magnificent Hall of the Ambassadors and the breathtakingly beautiful Court of the Lions and the Hall of the Abencerrajes. We’ll also visit the Generalife Palace and Gardens used as a summer palace and retreat by the Nazrid emirs of Granada. Admire the Patio de la Acequia with its long pools framed by flowerbeds, fountains, colonnades and pavilions, and the Sultana's Garden, thought to be inspired by the style of mediaeval Persian Gardens. br>
After the visit to the Alhambra, we’ll continue the tour with a visit to two of the city’s most well-known landmarks, the magnificent Cathedral and Royal Chapel. The Royal Chapel was built in the Gothic style as a mausoleum to house the remains of the Fernando and Isabella, the Catholic Monarchs and conquerors of Islamic Granada. The Renaissance Cathedral was built in the early 16th Century on the site of the former Nazrid Great Mosque and contains a wealth of art treasures. br>
Afterwards we’ll go for a stroll around two of the city’s most charismatic neighbourhoods. El Albaicin is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site, retaining the narrow winding streets of its mediaeval Moorish past, bright red geraniums cascading down whitewashed walls, the air scented by jasmine, lemon blossom and rose, the whole area dominated by the magnificent presence of the Alhambra. Finally we’ll make the climb to Sacromonte, the Holy Mountain, traditional home of gypsy culture in Granada where you can enjoy a drink in one of the neighbourhood’s famous caves.
