You shouldn't miss this trip to the mountain village of Guadalest, founded by the Moors in a spectacular setting in the Marina Baixa area. Admire the Arab castle dating from the 11th Century, seemingly emerging from the surrounding granite crags. Explore the attractive village with its higgledy piggledy houses and many churches and fascinating museums. Sample some of the region's delicious produce and go for an optional cruise on Guadalest reservoir.
On the route to Guadalest valley we'll drive along winding mountain roads, passing a succession of quaint traditional villages. We'll stop at Nucia, for stunning views down to the shimmering Mediterranean far below and the impressive mountain scenery. We'll stop at Polop, a beautifully maintained village with its brightly coloured houses, standing out against the mountainside. We'll visit a shop where you can sample and purchase some of the delectable local produce, including honey, fruit, moscatel wine and other delicacies. If you wish you can also go for a relaxing solar boat trip on the stunning Guadalest reservoir, just sit back and unwind as you enjoy the scenery and silence.
Then you will have plenty of time to explore Guadalest at your own pace. Climb to the Arab castle and the town's' famous watchtower. Look around the Baroque church, built between 1740 and 1753 and the 12th Century jailhouse. Visit some of the town's many museums, including a motorcycle museum, and a quirky salt and pepper pot museum with other 20,000 artefacts on display. There's plenty to do and see here – or may be you feel like watching the world go by from a shady pavement café.
