Gaudí and Modernisme in Old Town Walking Tour

Follow in the footsteps of legendary architect Antoni Gaudi and see some of his most emblematic buildings as well as other significant modernist masterpieces. This two-hour walking tour through weaves a wonderful trail through the heart of the Old Town tour and includes a visit to one of Barcelona’s best kept secrets.

Your architectural adventure begins at the fantastic Palau de la Música Catalana, which was designed by Lluis Domenech i Montaner and finished in 1908. Admire the elaborate sculpture on the corner of the façade, the Mudejar-inspired half arches and the iconic ticket booths.

See the Els Quatre Gats, the café where the leading modernists would argue the finer points of their trade. Take a brief break from the modernism and wander along the chic Portal de l’Angel shopping street to learn about the neo-classical Palau Moja and the medieval Hospital de Sant Pau.

‘Check in’ at the Hotel Espanya for a guided tour of this magnificent modernist gem, which is one of the city’s best kept secrets. Domenech i Montaner renovated it a century ago in his own inimitable style, bequeathing it with a uniqueness no competitor could ever match.

Enjoy the fun façade dotted with reliefs of opened umbrella at the Casa Bruno Quadros. Be dazzled by the Gaudi’s intricate ironwork street lamps at the Plaça Reial and finish the tour seeing his ‘darker’ side at the almost Gothic Palau Güell, which was built for his biggest client.

Meeting point: Next to the ticket office of the Palau de la Música Catalana at 4pm every day. Children up to the age of 10 can take part free of charge. Languages: English only.
