Cordoba is one of Andalusia’s most fascinating cities with a sensuous mixture of Roman, Moorish and Jewish and Christian cultures. The city was once the centre of an Islamic Empire extending from the Atlantic to the Persian Gulf. On this full-day guided tour you’ll visit all the main attractions including the sublime Mezquita and you’ll also have plenty of time to explore the winding network of lanes, squares and whitewashed courtyards for yourself.
After being picked up from your hotel we’ll venture deep into the Andalusian countryside, passing through the picturesque old town of Antequera on the way. On arriving at Cordoba we’ll go on a panoramic tour of the city, taking in all the main attractions.
The highlight of any visit here has to be the Catholic Cathedral, converted from a Mosque after the Christian conquest of the city in 1236. With nearly 1,000 pillars, the cathedral's original Gothic architecture is combined with Baroque and Renaissance elements.
We’ll also go for a stroll around the old Jewish Quarter. Visit the mediaeval synagogue dating back to 1315 and admire the monuments to some of Cordoba’s most famous sons, including the Roman philosopher Seneca, the Muslim philosopher Averroes and the Jewish philosopher Maimonides.
Walk across the town’s famous Roman Bridge, spanning the slow-moving Guadalquivir River, passing through the triumphal arch of San Rafael. Then you’ll have some free time to explore the tangle of narrow mediaeval streets surrounding the Mezquita. We’ll wander around this maze of alleyways with such evocative names as la Calleja de las Flores, la Calleja del Pañuelo and la Calleja de las Flores. Stop to experience the beauty of the whitewashed patios, decorated by colourful flowers and scented with jasmine, rose and honey-suckle.
