Chocolate Museum

Enjoy a journey through the history of chocolate at The Chocolate Museum, located in the former convent of Saint Augustine, a beautiful historic building located in the old quarter of the city.

Discover everything you need to know about this indulgent treat, from its origins to its arrival in Barcelona and how it rapidly spread to the rest of Europe. Study the history, the myth´s and the facts about our favourite sweet treat as well as learning interesting information regarding its medical and nutritional properties.

The Museum is located in a historic building which was linked to the history of chocolate long before it became a museum. In the 18th century the building was used as an academy for the Bourbon army where an ounce and a half of chocolate was given to the troops for breakfast every day due to its energy boosting properties. For this reason the king´s personal guards became known as the “chocolateros”.

Learn how since its discovery in the 15th century, chocolate has played a key role in the economic and social history of Barcelona with the City´s port being a starting point for the sale and distribution of the product all over Europe, and discover how the City became the first to produce chocolate as a beverage at the end of the 19th Century.
