Carmen Thyssen Museum Málaga

The brand new Carmen Thyssen Museum houses an impressive collection of 19th Century Spanish art, with a particular focus on Andalusia, including works by Fritz Bamberger, Manuel Barrón, Andrés Cortés y Aguilar and Genaro Pérez Villaamil. You will also find works by Zurbaran and the great Andalusian painter Julio Romero de Torres. The museum itself is housed in a purpose-built building around the 16th Century Palacio de Villalon.

The exhibition spaces, three rooms for the permanent collection and two for temporary exhibitions, were newly built next to the palace, which houses the Old Masters collection. Overall, the museum covers 7,147 square metres, of which 5,185 can be used to display artworks. Since opening in 2011, the collection has been praised for its wide-ranging scope and the rigorous quality of its approach. It constitutes a remarkably coherent group of works in a comprehensive survey of the genres characteristic of 19th-century Spanish painting, with a particular focus on Andalusia.
