Visit the desert island of Cabrera by speed boat. This idyllic isle is the largest uninhabited island in the Mediterranean. Bathe in unbelievably turquoise waters teeming with fish, beautiful beaches and spectacular rugged scenery.
Cabrera and the waters that surround it are a National Park, and dolphins and sea turtles are often spotted. There are thousands of sea birds including all sorts of gulls and the rare osprey. History buffs will find the island fascinating. Hannibal is reputed to have been born here and the natural harbour has been used by pirates and corsairs since time immemorial. Climb up to the medieval castle dominating the harbour. It enjoys fabulous panoramic views of the island and sea. There is also a monument to the 8,000 French prisoners of war who starved to death here during the Napoleonic wars, when the island was turned into an inhospitable concentration camp.
The boat leaves the nearby port of Colonia de Sant Jordi and the trip takes around 15 minutes. As you speed though the waves, an audioguide explains the geology, history, flora and fauna of this amazing archipelago. On arrival, explore the area around the harbour – go for swim in the pristine waters, visit the castle and museum or relax over a cool drink in the famous Fishermen's Canteen, Cabrera’s only bar. On the way back, the boat stops at Sa Cova Blava, a beautiful blue grotto, where you can dive into the crystal-clear waters.
Meeting/pick-up point: No.20 Carre Gabriel Roca, Colonia de San Jordi.
