A Full Day in Bratislava

Full day, with Gerulata, Devin, lunch (on one's own). 9 hours. €290 plus entrance fees, busfares, boat tickets or bicycle rental (if these options selected).

Our day begins with a walk up the hill to the Castle, where we enjoy the panoramic view of Old Town, the New (UFO) Bridge on the south bank, and Austria in the distance, as well as the historic Castle grounds. Coming down, we take a city bus to the ruins of the Roman camp at Gerulata. Returning to town, we enter St. Martin's, which served as the coronation church for Habsburg rulers as Hungarian monarchs during the Turkish occupation of Buda(-Pest). A walking tour of Old Town takes us up to lunch time, and a list of fine restaurants will be provided. After lunch we enter the Archbishop's Palace, to see the city's most prized artwork, the Hero and Leander Tapestries (London, 1640), acquired by the local Hungarian Archbishop, but “misplaced” when hidden in a wall during Napoleon's seige of 1609, later rediscovered, and now the city's pride and joy. Our walkabout continues into the more modern part of town where we see Uprising Square, the enchanting Blue Church, and the new Eurovea shopping center on the Danube. Next we boat, bike, or bus to Devin Castle, a Slavic stronghold since Moravian times in the 9th century, with a commanding view of Austria and the confluence of the Morava and Danube, from 1945-1989 the southeastern corner of the “Iron Curtain”. Our day ends with a tour of the extraordinary castle ruins.
