After a drive through rolling hills and peaceful countryside to Central Serbia – Sumadia we will arrive to TOPOLA to visit the residence and burial church of the founder of the Karageorgevic dynasty, Karageorge and see the exhibition of objects related to the First Serbian Uprising in the 19th century.
Then we will visit the Church of Saint George at OPLENAC Hill, decorated with wall mosaics made of 40 million glass cubes, in 15 thousand shades. The entire area of the mosaic is 3,500 square metres (38,000 sq ft) and there are 725 painted compositions with 1500 figures.
The church is a sort of a museum of reproductions of the best frescoes of the Serbian medieval art. Copies from 60 Serbian medieval churches and monasteries can be admired here. A chandelier made of weapons used by Serbian Soldiers in World War I is hanging in the centre of the church above the star in the floor from where the acoustics are the best. In the crypt bellow there are tombs of the members of the Royal dynasty.
In the Home of King Peter I, who became a King after 45 years of exile and whose reign started a new phase in modern Serbia we will see objects which belonged to Karageorgevic family, their portraits and numerous icons which they received as gifts mostly from Russia.
Later we will go to a ROYAL WINE CELLAR on several levels and see interesting wine barrels made of carved wood, some of them lavish gifts to King Alexander Karageorgevic.
After a wine tasting, we will procede to ARANDJELOVAC to the restaurant dedicated to the memory of King Alexander I and decorated with memorabilia related to him.
On our way back to Belgrade we will take a different route through the countryside and make a few more stops. Our last stop will be at the Mountain of AVALA where we will visit the Monument to Unknown Soldier, the work of famous Yugoslav sculptor Ivan Mestrovic.
