Five generations of the Yusupov family chose this palace to be the family nest in ST-Petersburg between 1830 and 1917. After the Bolshevik Revolution in October 1917 among many others they had to flee from Russia to save their lives leaving most of the family wealth behind.
The walls of the Palace witnessed the never-ending string of the most lavish balls and parties. The wealth of the Yusupov family was rumored to rival the wealth of the Romanov dynasty.
In December, 17, 1916 one of the most intriguing conspiracies of the world history, that is the murder of Grigory Rasputin, took place in the basement of the palace. The tour will take you to the exhibition which uncovers the facts of this tragic night.
Yusupov Palace is rather an exception among other Grand Ducal residences and other palaces of the Russian aristocracy in the former Russian capital. Although most of the artistic family collection was lost during the turbulent years of Revolution and communist regime, nowadays we have a rare chance to see resurrected state halls, private interiors and even the miniature in-house theatre.
