During this tour you will see St.Isaac's Cathedral, one of the largest domed buildings in the world. It was constructed to a project by Auguste de Montferrand from 1818 to 1858. It was considered to be the main Orthodox church of the Russian Empier. I'll tell you about the history of it's construction, show you the interiors of the Cathedral, that were decorated by the foremost artists of the period with paintings, sculpture and mosaics. St.Isaac's is sometimes named a «museum of minerals», because it's walls are faced inside with rare sorts of marble, malachite, lapis-lazuli and porphery.
Then we' walk to the Church of the Saviour on the Blood, that is also called the Church of the Resurrection of Crist. It was built on the site where Tsar Alexander 2 was fatally wounded on 1 March 1881. It was errected to a project by the architect Alfred Parland and Archimandrite Ignaty in 1907. This Church is really unique, because it is decorated with 7000 square metres of mosaics. The especially honored place on the Churh is the magnificent tent canopy, made of greyish-violet and greenish jasper, lapis-lazuli and rhodonite.
