During this general city tour you will see the main sights Novosibirsk offers its visitors, including the Railway Station, the Ascension Cathedral (1913), Lenin Square with the Opera and Ballet Theatre, St.Nikolas Chapel (the center of Russia), Alexander Nevsky Cathedral (1899) and other great objects built mostly during the first half of the 20th century.
We can start the city tour from any place, but I prefer starting it from the Main Railway Station, which is a typical example of Stalin-style architecture, with a lot of emphasis on big and massive forms symbolizing the power of the Soviet State.
We make a stop at Lenin Square and have a short walking tour of the city center. There are many options here. During the walking part tourists can have a cup of delicious coffee at one of numerous cozy cafes, visit one of several museums, for example, the museum Russian Birch Bark.
A closer look at the Opera and Ballet Theatre is a must. It is the biggest theatre building in Russia and one of the biggest in the world. Its main hall holds up to 2000 people, and its dome in unique in its correlation between the diameter and the thickness.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is the first stone church in the city built in 1899. It was planned by the government to destroy the church in 1930, but it survived and now it's one of the most beautiful and oldest city buildings.
On the opposite side of the street you'll see a famous house with 100 flats, originally built for the elite, which took the Gran Prix at the world exhibition in Paris in 1937.
