Mixing with the locals and living like them is actually true experience giving you a cultural which most hotel-bound tourists miss. This cultural vacation is fantastic all year round, but the experience is heightened and somewhat more representative during the winter holidays and the week before Easter.
Why is the week before Christmas or Easter totally different? In Romania, communities still retain many of the centuries-old custom of their ancestors. For Romania, the true flavour of Christmas is the sacrificial slaughter of the pig. In the week before Christmas, Romanian smallholders and farmers will select one of their animals and use it to prepare food for the Christmas dining table and the months beyond. The whole extended family is often involved in the processing of the animal and it is true to say that good use is made of everything (but the squeak): sausages, black pudding, pirme cuts of meat, the skin, the ears, the trotter – it is all prepared, preserved, smoked, brine cured or cooked up in a collaborative effort by both the men and the women, both young and old.
Traditions like this might appear rough at first glance, but the children of the Romanian countryside grow up knowing exactly where their food has come from with a keen association development between the quality of their food and its origins and conditions or raising. What can be more organic and have fewer ‘food miles’ than a free ranging courtyard pig raised and butchered and consumed by the same family?
Similarly, in the week before Easter, the countryside tradition is to sacrifice a lamb, which is made into all kinds of goodies to be eaten on Easter Day.

Itinerary
Day 1: Friday
Arrive inBucharest. Accompanied by your tour leader you will travel by Romanian transportation to the train station and take the train up to Sighisoara. Take a tour of the medieval citadel with its churches, guild towers and clock tower. With a minibus that locals usually travel on, you will go to a nearby Saxon village, where you stay most of this week in a traditional inn, clean, with very tasty and natural food.

Day 2: Sathurday
After breakfast, you will go on a short hike up to the top of the overlooking hill to visit the village fortress. On your way you will enjoy archaic rural scenery. On your way back you stop to visit the fortified church, located near the centre of the village. In the afternoon you may wander about on the beautiful hills of the area. I must warn that this is a tradition village so don’t expect nightlife – the evening can be spent in the restaurant of the inn, their bar, or perhaps all the clean fresh air will send you to sleep earlier than usual. If not, perhaps a glass of the local palinca (plum brandy) will help you on your way!

Day 3: Sunday
After breakfast you will take a horse cart/tractor to the close byvillageofCloasterf, where we will first stop at the fortified church. After that, a village housewife will cook you a traditional lunch. You may help her if you wish and then join her for lunch. We will help you cook a dish specific to the area, and after lunch we can visit a traditional farm. We will go back tour guesthouse in the car/ tractor.

Day 4: Monday
After Breakfast, you take a bus to Sighisoara. From there your tour leader takes you by car on a tour of the surrounding fortress churches. Being a passenger on the Romanian roads is a experience itself! We will go to Biertan, visit the fortress complex built in the 14th century. On the way you will stop at a blacksmith’s workshop, where generations of iron workers have been forging objects in the same way for centuries. Later, we will move on to Medias, visit its fortified church and then straight to Agnita to see the last fortified church of the day.
We drive back by car to Sighisoara and back to Saschiz by publi minibus.

Day 5: Tuesday
Today you can arrange your own program. You may go souvenir shopping in Sighisoara or you can stroll through the village to admire the Saxon houses. There are some interesting nature walks in the area and there is also a cycling path. Your tour leader will be happy to help you arrange rental bikes.

Day 6: Wednesday
Today you go to explore and enjoy real rural farm life! Depending on the season, you may end up getting involved in various activities on the farm. You might go with your tour assistant to see the cattle breeders, to learn how cows are milked, to meet a shepherd in his house up on the pastures. A country-style lunch from an eco-pack is provided.

Day 7: Thursday
After breakfast we prepare to return toBucharest, where we will spend a few hours in the life of a Romanian city dweller. We will travel around the city by metro, by trolley bus, or by tramway, visiting a few of the capital’s most notable sights. With the noise, the traffic, and the hustle and bustle it will be a stark contrast to the rural existence of the previous six days and I am sure you will be yearning to be back in the peaceful countryside!
In the evening you can enjoy the nightlife of Old city with its pub, clubs, outdoor cafes and restaurants.

Day 8: Friday
After breakfast, you will meet your tour assistant in the lobby of your hotel in order to help you transfer to the airport.
Note: During ‘Ignat’ week (the one before Christmas) you can participate in the traditional slaughter of a pig (if you want and you dare, as the tradition could be disturbing to some, with plenty of bloodshed) and similarly, guests participating in this tour in the week before Easter can witness the customary lamb slaughter. In both cases, you can watch (or indeed, help) with the subsequent preparation of traditional dishes and delicacies. You can also listen to the children singing traditional Christmas carols during the Christmas week.
