Turda city is located only 35 km away from Cluj. This is a very important place for the Romanian culture because here was signed the “religious peace”. As a following five Catholic and Reformed denominations were welcomed in the princedom of Transylvania. The “land beyond forests” became one of the most tolerant states in Europe. In the Middle Ages the city was very rich due to the salt mines that were to be found here. Ever since Roman times, these mines were exploited, the salt produced here, being transported to Rome. Later, the mines were used as prisons for the most feared bandits. Few people managed to come out alive, the majority of prisoniers being condemned to work here their whole lives. In antiquity, the Romans have built here the famous “thermes”, which can be used until now. One thing remained unchanged: the benefits of salt water spas, especially on the body and bones.
Due to massive investments, the salt mine was transformed into an interesting museum and multipurpose center.
The city lies at the foot of the Western Carpathians, one of the most spectacular mountain groups of Romania. Because of the limestone soil composition, the landscape is spectacular: there are customary deep caves, wild keys and ice pails. If you want to be impressed, visit the Turda Gorge National Park.
The legend says that a famous Hungarian king was defeated in a battle and he tried to escape in the mountains. Reaching the foothills, he prayed to God to split the mountain in two, in order for him to be able to pass. His prayers were heard and, as a consequence, the Turda Gorge was formed. Rare species of animals and plants, such as wild garlic, stone marten and golden rock eagle live here.
Program proposal:
First we cross the Turda Gorge and we will return on another path, thus having the opportunity to discover all these jewels of the nature. The amateurs of extreme sensations can take lessons from real pros in climbing and paragliding. Leaving the beautiful landscape of the Apuseni Mountains behind, we return to Turda. Next, we visit the galleries of the mine, the old detention centers, we’ll discover the tools used since the Middle Ages and we will learn more about these places.
After an exhausting day of sightseeing and hiking, we deserve some time for relaxation.We will go and enjoy ourselves in the salty water baths in Turda.
In the evening we return to Cluj.
