In the heart of Portugal lie three of the most important Portuguese monuments, considered by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The Monastery of Alcobaça, founded by King Afonso Henriques, was the spiritual, artistic and cultural centre of the Cistercians in Portugal. A building of the first Gothic period in Portugal, it houses the tombs of King Pedro I and Inês de Castro, whose love story must be the most beautiful of all times.
Near Alcobaça, the construction of the monastery of Batalha was begun in 1386 to fulfil the promise made by King João I to Virgin Mary in return for victory at the Battle of Aljubarrota.
The Convent of Christ in Tomar still retains memories of the Knights Templar. The architecture contains traces of many different styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Manueline.
