Sintra: World Heritage

The tour starts in Sintra. town which is considered World Heritage by UNESCO for its cultural diversity.

In Sintra we begin to visit Palácio da Pena. Builted between the years of 1839 and 1849 at the behest of King Consort D. Fernado II, Palácio da Pena and the park thet surrounds it, are the great work of Romanticism in Portugal.

Built on the ruins of the Monastery of Our Lady of Pena, the monument was the summer residence of the Royal Family.

With many shapes and colors, the exterior of the Palace refers to those who visit the imaginary of fairy tales. Its architecture and construction evokes the golden age of Portugal's history. The interior is well decorated with velvet, warm colors, scenographic sculptures and mythological elements.

Built from the cloister of the monastery, Palácio da Pena became the ex-libris of the region. In the same time the works were made in the park of Pena. Here were planted trees and flowers from various parts of the world, including from the Black Forest.

After lunch we suggest the visits to National Palace of Sintra and Quinta da Regaleira.

With an irregular plan, the National Palace of Sintra, is the only medieval palace of the country. Have been built on the former residence of Muslims, the building was expanded over the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries.

The most important works were made by king D. João I, who built several outbuildings, including Sala dos Cisnes and the famous kitchen. Fully decorated with white tiles, impresses by its size and the two conical chimneys over 30 feet tall that encimam, considered the town's landmark.

Built between 1904 and 1910, Quinta da Regaleira take the visitors to the imaginary, mysticism and esotericism. The place was built based on the idyllic spirit, the architectural revivals, and the exaltation of Portugal's history through mystical and esoteric influences. We recommend a visit to the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, the Tower and to the Palace of Millions. Another highlight is the descent of initiation well, with a nine-story staircase that leads us through the labyrinthine caves.

Before returning to São Martinho do Porto, we passed through Sintra Cascais Natural Park. Here lies the Cabo da Roca, the Europe westernmost point.
