Our journey begins in the town of Mafra. Located about 25 km from Lisbon, this is where is located Palácio Nacional de Mafra, one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
Constructed by King D. João V in a virtue of a promise on his succession, this monument is the greatest work of Baroque architecture in Portugal. Builted between 1717 and 1730, this project was originally a convent for the Franciscan monks.
However the entry of gold from Brazil led to the work won the magnitude by which is known today. Upstairs lie the sumptuous accomodations that span the entire length of the monument, state in their respective wards the rooms of the king and queen. Palácio Nacional de Mafra is also noted for its library. Considered one of the most beautiful libraries in Europe, has an estate with over 36,000 books, bound in leather and written in gold by Franciscan monks.
After visiting Palácio Nacional de Mafra and lunch, we went to the Forest of Mafra, known as Tapada de Mafra. It was created in 1747 by D. João V, with the aim of being a recreational area for the royal family and nobility, who had the habit of hunt. With an area of 1187 hectares, here are several species of fauna and flora, amphibians and reptiles.
Leaving Mafra, we make a stop in the Village Typical of José Franco, known as Aldeia do Sobreiro. Builted in 1945, this is a real museum that portrays the daily life of local residents.
Before returning to São Martinho do Porto, we pass by Ericeira. Known to be the ideal place for surfing, it was from here that Portuguese royal family went into exile in England after the Republic wich was established in 1910.
