Bridges over the Tagus river

Explore the south bank of the River Tagus and discover the laidback charms of the Setubal peninsula with this guided five-hour excursion.

This fascinating escape from the big city covers history, culture, nature, wine, traditional crafts and even a feat of modern engineering. You will visit the picturesque fishing village of Sesimbra, which is dominated by a walled Moorish castle on a hilltop.

At Azeitao, which lies on the edge of a nature reserve, there’s a visit to a handicrafts centre, where the decorative glazed tiles for which Portugal is famed will be on display. Sample the local varieties at a rustic wine cellar.

Then we will venture into the lush Arrabida Natural Park, where we’ll make our way to the summit of Mount Arrabida, from where we’ll enjoy stunning views of Setubal and Troia as well as the estuary of the River Sado, a habitat for bottlenose dolphins. ‹br›‹br› We’ll pause for a break at the inimitable setting of the Pousada de Palmela, a hilltop hotel located in a restored castle and convent complex that boasts spectacular views over the mountains, the Atlantic and fields of vines.

The adventure has one more surprise, a thrilling crossing over the Tagus on the Vasco da Gama Bridge, the longest in Europe. Its length of more than 17km makes it wider that the straits between Europe and Africa at their narrowest point.

End or closing time: Approx. 7.30 pm.
