See a different side of Boracay and explore Caticlan, the rural Malay area nearby, and understand first hand that Boracay isn't all about beaches!
Start your Boracay tour at the Cagban Jetty Port, from where you'll make your way to Caticlan. Jump on a typical local motorised trike and travel past rice fields along the rough Barangay Road to Malay Poblacion. See the City Hall and typical Barangay community centre. Take a walk through the nearby caves to see bats, stalactites, and stalagmites. The caves are surprisingly spacious and easy to explore with many open chambers and fascinating features.
Next on our Boracay Malay tour you'll meet some locals, including a fisherman who will demonstrate the traditional and modern fishing methods used here. This is definitely a prime opportunity to try some fresh grilled fish, so don't miss out! Then you'll meet a rice farmer to learn about the rice cycles and processes, and be able to try suman, a rice and coconut cake cooked in banana leaf.
The next stop on our tour of the Malay area is the Nabaoy River, where lunch is served in a traditional ‘nipa’ tree hut on the banks. Enjoy true Malaynon cuisine made from ingredients that grow on the river banks, and try the fresh water shrimp, the gabi root, chicken dishes, and the fern salad - all local specialties. After lunch we'll have time for a bit of a rest (eating is tiring!), and it's up to you whether you'd like to take a siesta or swim in the river.
Head back to the trike for a short journey to the Motag Barangay, and along the way see coconut oil production and coconut drying. At the Motag Barangay, visit the SKA Ladies Cooperative to learn the art of making soap from entirely natural ingredients. There’s also a chance to get involved and make a woven palm leaf bag, a material known locally as banig.
At this point, our Boracay Malay tour will come to a close, with a trike trip back to the jetty for our return to Boracay Island.
