Bay of Islands Shore Excursion: Sightseeing Cruise and Kerikeri Tour

Discover the highlights of one of New Zealand’s most popular destinations while in port at Paihia. Board a boat for a 2-hour Bay of Islands sightseeing cruise in the morning, then visit the charming town of Kerikeri by coach in the afternoon. On the sightseeing cruise, you’ll stop at a beach and cruise past Roberton Island (Motuarohia), Black Rocks and more while hearing commentary about the area. In Kerikeri you’ll visit historic buildings, then sample the goodies at a local winery and boutique chocolate shop.

Once your cruise ship docks at Paihia, meet the courtesy shuttle at your ship’s dock at Waitangi Wharf and take a 5-minute drive to the departure point for your 2-hour boat tour of the scenic Bay of Islands. Take in the highlights and hear about its Maori and European influences.

In these sheltered waters, you might expect to spot whales, seals, dolphins, penguins and other sea birds. You’ll see dramatic landscapes including Black Rocks, then stop at an island and check out the beach.

Glide past Roberton Island (Motuarohia), where a number of archaeological sites have been excavated. Learn about the historical significance of the Bay of Islands, including how the Treaty of Waitangi was drawn up and signed here in 1840, a document considered to be the founding document of the nation.

After an informative and scenic 2-hour cruise, you’ll return to Paihia and have free time for lunch (own expense) before boarding a comfortable coach for the afternoon tour to Kerikeri.

Kerikeri is famous for its fertile farmland, with fruits and vegetables flourishing alongside the vineyards that supply a growing wine industry. You’ll stop first at the family-run Ake Ake vineyard to sample their organic wine and coffee. Next, visit two of New Zealand’s oldest European buildings: Mission House and the Stone Store, originally built for mission supplies and now selling gift items. You’ll finish your tour at Makana Confections where you’ll see the chocolate production process and sample their handmade treats.

You’ll also learn about Kerikeri’s history, significant for early Maori-European negotiations like those between the powerful Ngapuhi chief Hongi Hika and the Rev Samuel Marsden.

You’ll be returned to Paihia at the end of your tour.
