Here’s your chance to test the story of the little boy who saved Holland from flooding by putting his finger in the dike. On this full-day excursion to North Holland you will wander through picture-postcard villages, ride a steam train – and visit the Enclosing Dike keeping out the North Sea.
We’ll head north from Amsterdam passing through landscapes punctured every now and them by a distant belfry or windmill. The first stop will be the Enclosing Dike, the 90 metre wide, 7.25 metre high and 32km long dam finished in the 1930s. The Dutch are rightly proud of this impressive piece of engineering, which was built with the twin functions of preventing the country from flooding and reclaiming land from the newly created Ijsselmeer south of the dike.
Then you’re in for a typically Dutch treat, with a visit to a working windmill in the picturesque town of Medemblik on the IJsselmeer. After a short guided stroll through this village of canals flanked by gabled houses, you’ll have free time for lunch.
We’ll meet again after lunch to board a romantic steam train for a thrilling hour-long ride, meandering through flower fields from Medemblik to Hoorn.
After a short walking tour of Hoorn, you will have some free time to explore this charming city which was a thriving port during the Dutch colonial empire.
