Quality education in Nepal is often hard to come by. Working with MICATZ offers the opportunity to help build a brighter future for children, and in turn, the future of the country. Coupled with important skills, such as math and artistic expression, the ability to speak English fluently can open the doors for many to become and do whatever they desire. A volunteer teacher in Nepal will primarily teach English and math to students between the ages of 6 and 13. Depending on the needs of the school, the volunteer may be asked to assist in other areas, like sports, art, and music.
More than merely reciting knowledge, volunteering as a teacher is about handing a part of you over to the children. It is about establishing a relationship that says, “I care”. In helping to develop a useful skill, you will be telling your students that they are worth the time, and that they can accomplish anything. The time and compassion of a volunteer is truly invaluable to the growth of a young human being.
The success of your volunteer experience is entirely dependent upon you and what you want out of it. A proactive attitude and a willingness to help are essential in making the most of your time spent as a volunteer teacher in Nepal.
Orientation:
Volunteers are welcomed by a MICATZ representative at the airport in Kathmandu, before being guided to their new home. After arrival and getting acquainted with the area, volunteers then have personal meetings with the representative to determine how to best utilize the volunteer's skills, time and experience.
Project Start Dates:
Help is needed year-round. Volunteers determine their own start dates.
Accommodations:
Volunteers will typically live with a host family that is involved with MICATZ. Two or three meals per day will be provided to you by your host family, depending on the individual situation. Assistance will be provided to help ensure safe and reliable transportation to, from, and within Nepal.
Project Duration and Cost:
The maximum length of stay in Nepal is currently 5 months on a traveler’s visa, in accordance with the government. Although the duration of a volunteer’s stay is entirely up to the individual, and always appreciated, a longer stay is certainly more valuable and useful to the students. Volunteer fees vary, based on the length of stay and placement with MICATZ. And remember that it is much less costly to visit once for a longer stay, than to make multiple short trips.
