Dig up a history cloaked in mystery and be charmed by the secrets of the Mayan empire on your visit to the Mexican Caribbean coast. Perched on 12-metre cliffs over looking the sparkling azure Caribbean sea, the beautifully preserved Mayan ruin of Tulum is a truly one-of-a-kind destination. With sweeping coastline views, Tulum is the only Mayan ruin on the Yucatan coast that is situated on a cliff above stunning white-sand beaches and glistening waters; a spellbinding combination for any visitor.
Just 128km south of Cancun, Tulum was one of the last cities inhabited and built by the Mayas. Its compact nature makes it a perfect site for exploring with ease during our 4.5-hour excursion. One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is also one of the only Mayan ruins surrounded by imposing stone walls on three sides. Ponder the mysteries of its life as an ancient fortress as you learn about Tulum's history as a seaport, trading mainly in jade and turquoise.
Forage through the fascinating Cenotes (cave systems) in the area including Maya Blue, Naharon, Temple of Doom, Tortuga, Vacaha and Grand Cenote to name a few. Cenotes are natural pits or sinkholes that have occurred due to the collapse of limestone bedrock that exposes groundwater underneath. Learn about the way the Maya often used these natural formations during rituals for ancient sacrificial offerings.
Breath in the sea air, bath in warm sunlight and revel in the balmy breeze, all beside a world-class, perfectly preserved archeological site.
