It’s time for a food adventure!
Mexico City’s markets are some of the most vibrant places in the city, and it’s our mission to open them up to you, just as locals experience them. Our Mexican market foodie journey begins just as most locals’ does – on the subway!
First stop on our Mexico City markets tour is Jamaica Market, the biggest flower market in the city, with corridors lined with stands selling fruit, herbs, piñatas, meat, fish, corn, flowers, and everything in between. As you wander through the market, you’ll get to taste an enjoyable cup of steaming atole (a corn-based beverage), tamales, Mexican barbecue, fruit cocktail, or exotic mixed juice. Experience the colourful flower aisle, where the local vendors will match the colour of your eyes or clothes with their most exotic flowers.
Hop back on the subway as we make our way to Sonora Market, one of the most bizarre places in the city. At Sonora, you can find anything from your favourite superhero costume to a magic love potion or a natural hangover cure. We’re pretty sure you’ll be amazed at the many different colours, smells, and the sheer variety of things that you can find in this market.
After Sonora Market, we’ll return to the city centre for a walk to reach a relatively unknown market (even some Mexicans don’t know about this market!), where you’ll find the most typical foods, fruits, and juices that the locals live for. Your Urban Adventures guide will provide you with some interesting information about the market’s unique history from the first half of the 1900s, and provide context within modern Mexican society.
Finally, we’ll walk to a local restaurant that features some of the strangest seasonal varieties of Mexican food. Here, we’ll dig in to a delicious lunch to top off our Mexico City markets tour with a “panza llena, corazon contento” meaning “full tummy and happy heart”, as the saying goes. Let all of the exotic experiences you have seen dance in your head as you take your afternoon siesta back in the comfort of your hotel, or prepare for an afternoon of adventure at the Teotihuacan pyramids.
