Malacca was founded by an exiled prince fromSumatranamed Parameswara. Merchants fromChina, India Europe and Arab countries were all making port-of-call in this prosperous centre where silk, gold, tea, spice, tobacco and countless of items changed hands. The fame of this prosperous centre attracted powerful invaders and in year 1511 the Portuguese invaded and took control of Malacca followed by the Dutch in 1641. As from 1826, it was ruled by the British East India Company inCalcuttaand it was under the Japanes rule during Word War II before it came under the control of the local government. Today this once battered town shows of its remnants left behind each rule during its glorious days.
