Highlights of Georgetown

Georgetown, named after King George III, is a window to the sights, sounds and scents of this fascinating town. Penang, formerly named “The Prince of Wales Island” was the capital of the Straits Settlement. Situated in the heart of South East Asia, it was an important port of call during the spice trade. The people, the food, the architectural heritage and cultures bear witness to the transformation of Penang to what it is today... A Heritage Jewel. Highlights: * Thai Buddhist Temple - which houses the 108 ft long Reclining Buddha. Sitting across the road is the Burmese Buddhist Temple. * Royal Selangor Pewter Showroom for a brief demonstration on pewter finishing. The bustling waterfront - “homes on stilts”, which forms a water village dating back to the early Chinese immigrants, give clue to Penang’s yesteryears. * Photo-stop at the Khoo Kongsi - one of the most beautiful Chinese clan houses with intricate wood and stone carvings. Winner of the UNESCO Asia-Pacfic Heritage Conservation Award. * Drive along the Street of Harmony, which is bordered by religious landmarks such as Kapitan Keling Mosque (the first Indian-Muslim mosque in Penang) with its domes and minarets; the Sri Mahamariaman Temple devoted to a popular Hindu Goddess; Goddess of Mercy (Kuan Yin) Temple, built in 1800; St. George's Church, oldest Anglican Church (1818) in the Region. * Penang State Museum - which houses a collection of historical items (Note: State Museum is closed on Fridays). * Drive pass Chinatown, an old cherished charm of Georgetown.
