Mount Kenya 5 Day Climb

Mount Kenya (5188m/17021ft) is the highest mountain in Kenya and the second highest in Africa after Mount Kilimanjaro. It's a spectacular five day climb to the peak as you cross through the lowland forests and up into the zone of alpine tundra which hosts giant groundsels and lobelias. A number of small glaciers are still to be found around the summit. Mount Kenya has 3 summits; Batian (5199m), Nelion (5188m) and Lenana Pt (4985m). This climb will take you up the Sirimon Route to the hiker's summit of Lenana Pt (4985m) and down via the Chogoria route so that you can enjoy a complete traverse of the mountain. Our package starts from Nairobi where we will pick you up at your hotel on the morning of the first day and drive to the mountain to start the hike up to old Moses. The following days hike up to Shipton Camp takes us past the peaks of Teleki and Sendeyo (3990m) which are actually ancient volcanic vents of the main peak. The following day to Austrian Hut is a fairly easy one and we can get some rest in the afternoon to prepare for the summit. We will start early on day four to make the final steep climb to the peak which offers views of Mount Kilimanjaro to the south and Mt. Elgon to the northwest. The summit day is about 10 hours of hiking in total as we will head back down the mountain to Chogoria Bandas for the night. The final day we will walk through the forest and back to the Chogoria gate to meet our driver and head back to Nairobi.

We will pick you up at 7:30am at your hotel in Nairobi. Leaving Nairobi we will drive 3 or 4 hours to Nanyuki where we pick up any remaining supplies needed for the climb at the local Nakumatt (supermarket). It's another hour of driving to the park gate where we will have a cooked lunch and process our park permits. It's about 3 hours of hiking to reach Old Moses (3300m) where we will set up camp for the night.

Day 2: Old Moses to Shipton Camp

Hiking Time: 7 to 8 hours; Elevation (4200m/13780ft)

We will get an early start at 6:30am and enjoy breakfast before preparing for the days climb. We will ascend to Likii North Valley which lies below the peaks of Teleki and Sendeyo (3990m). These smaller peaks are ancient volcanic vents of the main peak. Continuing we will climb out of the valley to Mackinders Valley for lunch where we can enjoy the many large groundsels and good views of the main peak. After lunch it's another 3 hours of hiking to Shipton Camp (4200m) where we will spend the night.

Day 3: Shipton Camp to Austrian Hut

Hiking Time: 3 to 4 hours ; Elevation (4895m/16059ft)

Today is a shorter day and we will have breakfast at 7:30am before packing and hitting the trail. It's a good climb up to Simba Col (4610m) from where we will proceed on a more gradual trail up to the Austrian Hut (4895m). Get some rest in the afternoon as we will have an early start the following day for the climb.

Day 4: Austrian Hut to Lenana Point to Chogoria Bandas

Hiking Time: 9 to 11 hours; Elevation (4985m/16354ft)

We will have an early start today at 4:30am to go for the summit of Mount Kenya or Lenana Pt (4985m). There are 3 summits of Mount Kenya and is this is the summit normally reached by trekkers. Batian (5199m) and Nelion (5188m) the two higher summits are only accessible to rock climbers. This morning's hike up to Lenana is probably the most difficult on the trail so far and it's quite steep. However, it will only take us a few hours and by 6:30am most groups will reach the summit. Mount Kilimanjaro is visible from the summit as is Mt. Elgon to the northwest. After taking in the view and getting some photos we will hike about 2 hours down to Mintos Hut for a hot breakfast. It's another 5 hours of hiking down to Chogoria Bandas where we will have dinner and camp.

Day 5: Chogoria Bandas to Chogoria Gate to Nairobi

We will get started around 7:30am this morning and it's about a 10km walk through the forest to where you will meet your driver who will take you back to Nairobi.
