Experience traditional Kyoto by bike and by exploring its culinary gifts on this private half-day bike tour with a Japanese cooking class. You'll shop for your meal's ingredients at a venerable 400-year-old market, then cycle through town to a historic building where you learn to cook obanzai-ryori, the home cooking - or soul food - of Kyoto. Take in the culinary traditions, classic architecture and vibrant streets and culture of Kyoto on this fascinating half-day tour!
You'll meet your private guide at Kyoto station and pick up your bike for the day. Then follow your friendly guide on a leisurely ride through the backstreets of Kyoto, getting a feel for this amazing city as you glide along.
Your first destination is Nishiki Market, a food market that has been in the center of Kyoto for over 400 years! Known as 'Kyoto's Kitchen,' Nishiki Market is a narrow shopping street of six short blocks with more than 100 shops, most specializing in one item. Your guide will answer any questions you may have about the items you see at this eye-catching market.
After browsing the stalls and buying ingredients for today's lunch, you'll bike to a machiya for your cooking class. The machiya is a traditional wooden townhouse used by Kyoto merchants as residence and workspace.
Learn to prepare obanzai-ryori, the traditional cuisine of the Kyoto home kitchen. Obanzai-ryori has been slowly disappearing with Japan's modernization and westernization, but is making a comeback as younger generations discover its appeal. The dishes may appear simple, but the fresh ingredients and sophisticated seasonings make the fare delectable and nutritious.
Watch and follow along as your chef skillfully brings out the natural flavors of the ingredients. The meal is made up of multiple small dishes that are usually quite simple to prepare, and you'll have help at every step. You'll make a number of delicious dishes and then enjoy the feast that you have created. Along the way, you'll learn about Kyoto's culinary history and the special place that food holds in the culture.
At the end of this exquisite meal, hop back on your bike and follow your guide to Kyoto station where you end your tour.
