Your full-day excursion begins with pickup from your Tokyo hotel by air-conditioned coach. Heading south from Tokyo, you’ll be driven through the capital’s outskirts to the coast on Sagami Bay to visit the famous Great Buddha of Kamakura at Kotoku-in Temple. The monumental outdoor bronze statue is a national icon, and dates all the way back to 1252. As the statue is hollow, you can peer into the interior, then step back to photograph the Buddha’s immense 43-foot (13-meter) height.
Your tour continues to Hasedera Temple, renowned for its ancient wooden statue of a Buddhist figure, one of the largest in Japan. The lovely traditional temple is 1,200 years old and surrounded by hydrangea gardens dotted with statues, with views over the bay. You’ll also visit a Shinto shrine, Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, dating back to 1063, and surrounded by avenues of gateways, monumental stairways, ponds and shrines.
After a short drive by bus to Yokohama, enjoy a delicious Chinese lunch in Yokohama’s Chinatown. Your drive through Asia’s largest Chinatown reveals a mini-city of ornamental gates, Chinese shops and restaurants. In the afternoon, visit the traditional Japanese-style Sankeien Garden in Yokohama. While walking around the gardens, see a range of historic buildings relocated here from all over Japan, along with ornamental ponds, pagodas, and landscaped gardens of azaleas, maples and ginkgo trees.
Your tour continues with a drive over the Yokohama Bay Bridge across Tokyo Bay, and ends with a choice of drop-off in the commercial districts of Ginza or Shinjuku.
