Local Flavours Cruise allows you to float along through the 1,864 island strong archipelago known as the 1000 Islands. The area has an awe-inspiring history: the islands are the remnant peaks of an ancient mountain chair. They have been attacked by successive glacial advances then inundated by the floodwaters of the Great Lakes of Canada. These forces have created a richly diverse eco-region and make for impressive natural scenery.
Marvel at the diversity between the islands, which range in size from over 100 square kilometres to tiny outcroppings of rock that house just one tree and a few shrubs. The varied wildlife is certainly one of the highlights of this smooth journey. Keep your eyes peeled for Canada’s largest snake, the Black Rat Snake, spy an osprey nest and look out for one of the shipwrecks only 15 metres deep and visible to the watchful eye. Challenge yourselves to spot the Least Bittern, a wading bird whose wetland habitats are decreasing elsewhere within its northern range.
The 1000 Islands are a popular retreat, and many of the islands boast spectacular homes and even a few castles. Wave at other boats and breathe in the fresh air as you float leisurely downstream, soaking in the friendly atmosphere and the natural beauty of one of Canada and the United States’ most impressive shared natural features. Bask in the sunshine as you create a lasting tradition with your family by taking the Local Flavours Cruise.
