SOUTHERN ITALIAN WINE and CULINARY TOUR : Rome, Naples, Sorrento, Pompeii, Amalfi Coast, Paestum, & more!

Day 01: Benvenuti! Welcome to Italy! Rome

Arrive in Rome (transfer to the hotel from the airport optional)

Check- in at the Palazzo Ludovisi**** (or similar) in Rome

Free time for lunch and to relax

17:00 We meet with our WTG host in the hotel lobby to discuss the week’s upcoming events and then we depart for a Welcoming Wine Tasting at a famous local wine bar.  A certified sommelier partner will teach the group the essentials of Roman and Lazio Regional wine and their appropriate food pairing.  5 different wines will be tasted combined with traditional Italian regional cured meats and cheeses, and delicious breads, enough to make a light supper.

Free time for the rest of the evening.  Your WTG host will give some great ideas on what to do the rest of the evening.

Day 02: Castelli Romani / Olive Oil Tasting / Italian Bread Making

09:00 Our private vehicle will pick us up at the hotel for a visit of the scenic region South of Rome called the «Castelli Romani».  Beyond enjoying the panoramic views of hilltop towns, medieval age castles, and their surrounding vineyards, the entire day tour is dedicated to wine tasting at a beautiful estate in the Frascati Wine region, regional olive oil tasting, a walk through the old town of Genzano, and a visit of 2 local bread making facilities. A delicious lunch is also included at a typical Roman «Osteria».  The meal will consist of very traditional Roman delicacies and authentic traditional items.  Buon appetito!                                                                                                                                                               Free time for Supper in Rome

Day 03: Frascati Wine Tasting / Mini-Course of Wine Tasting

9:00 We depart our hotel for a more intense visit of the Frascati Region. Today we visit the fabled “Cantina Santa Benedetta" winery in the charming town of Monteporzio Catone. We will delight in a wine tasting of the best wines from their wine cellar and take a mini course in wine, providing our program members with a strong foundation for a visual, olfactory and gustatory examination of Italian wines.  This will allow guests to identify, recognize and value Italian wine and be familiar with its characteristics and history. After a delicious lunch of regional dishes, served using only fresh local products, we will enjoy a tasting of the famous white sparkling wine «Spumante»; the Frascati Superiore D.O.C, and a local red D.O.C.  Afterwards return to Rome.

16:00  After a little time to relax, we commence a 2 hour walking tour of Ancient Rome that will also include visits highlighting the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Triumphal Arches, Senate House, House of the Vestals, the Cryptoporticus of Nero, and a special discourse on general dishes and wines of ancient Rome.

Day 04: Naples / Wine Tasting of the Vesuvio Region

8:30 We transfer from Rome to Campania Felix, today known as the Naples Region.                                                                               

11:30 Upon arrival with some moments to freshen-up, we visit the «Cantina del Vesuvio» winery at Trecase  — This wonderful winery is located in the Vesuvio National Park. From the vineyards it is possible to admire the beautiful and stupendous Gulf of Naples with its famous islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida. 

We today visit the vineyards and will enjoy an explanation about their wine making processes followed by a visit of the cellars.

After our visit, our delicious lunch will consist of delicious local cheeses, Southern Italian meats, local pasta and a traditional Neapolitan dessert. Accompanying our feast, we will have a memorable wine tasting with a choice of four wines: vintage white, red and rose' from Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio; red  “reserva” from Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio  sealed with wax and harvested in 2007;  followed by distilled Vesuvio apricot or rose' spumante ”CAPAFRESCA….this will be memorable!

15:00 We arrive in nearby Naples where we will meet our local cultural expert and guide for a two hour introduction of the ancient city of Naples, once the most famous city of the ancient Roman nobility for good wine and song… On our introduction city walk, we will visit the Piazza del Plebiscito, Teatro San Carlo, Galleria Umberto and much more. We will also enjoy a panoramic tour  of the city passing through Via Caracciolo, the Riviera of Chiaia and the Posillipo hill… 

17:30 Check into the Hotel Grand Oriente**** or similar near the Historical Center of this 2,500 year old city.

20:00 Supper at a local wine bar (complete with regional dishes and wine – the food in Naples is divine!)

Day 05: Sorrento / Paestum Region

8:30  We are picked-up from our centrally located hotel and we depart for a visit of a mozzarella di bufala factory in Paestum.  Here, we will pass Pompeii and Salerno and head South where we will visit the farm and the production facility where the mozzarella di bufala is made fresh every morning. After our visit, we will of course be able to have a mozzarella di bufala tasting!

12:00 Visit of the Paestum archaeological site.  The magnificent Archeological site of Paestum was recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Cultural Heritage. The importance of Paestum is linked to the excellent state of conservation of Ancient Greek Temples, three of which are located in a green plain, which reflects different lights and moods, depending on the time of day and the season.

13:30: Free-time for lunch

4.00 pm: We arrive in Sorrento, the town of the ancient Sirens according to Homer where we will check in Check-in at the Grand Hotel Capodimonte**** (or similar) in Sorrento with wonderful views!

Day 06: Pompeii / Cooking Course in Sorrento

 9:00 We depart our hotel and transfer over to Pompeii.                                                                          10:00: We meet our local Pompeii cultural expert guide and commence a 2 hours guided tour of the Pompeii archaeological site. Pompeii holds an intense fascination for visitors today. Following the eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius in the year 79 AD, the thriving and prosperous town of Pompeii lay buried and forgotten for hundreds of years, and excavations still continue, giving us treasures from the Roman period. Our visits includes amazing ancient Roman homes with their original frescos,  original bathhouses and other public buildings, restaurants, bars, and an amphitheater, gymnasium and the ancient port. We will also discuss some of the regional wines and food of ancient Pompeii.   

12:00 Free-Time for lunch, there are many amazing selections just outside of the ancient walls.  Return to Sorrento for a free afternoon.  

17:00 We depart our hotel to meet our hosts for an authentic cooking class at «Mami Camilla» in Sorrento (typical local courses). You will love learning to cook like a local! After the cooking class, our supper will be served with what we have just freshly made!  Delicious!

Day 07: Amalfi Coast / Tramonti Wine Tasting

8:30 We depart the hotel for a full day Amalfi Coast guided tour!

10:00 After stops to take in the breathtaking panorama, we stop at the small town of Amalfi for a brief visit.

12:00 We wind our way back behind the mountains of the Amalfi Coast to arrive for a unique wine tasting at the «Cantina Apicella» at Tramonti — Our visit will be of the scenic vineyards and a visit of the well stocked cellar! Our lunch will be served featuring local cuisine and accompanied with an enjoyable wine tasting (includes: Tramonti Costa d’Amalfi DOC, Red, White and Rose'; Piedirosso; La Riserva, A’ Scippata; and finalized by la Grappa di Tramonti)

15:00 Rest of the day consists of continuing down the Amalfi Coast, with a brief stop at Ravello and its grandiose views of the coastline and finally at Vietri sul mare for some Ceramics shopping!

Day 08: Sorrento / Free Day

Breakfast, morning, and afternoon at your leisure.

10:00 For those who desire, we will offer an optional (upon request) two hours guided walking tour of Sorrento, otherwise you are free to shop, rest, relax, and to enjoy the morning and afternoon any way you like.

Free time for lunch and an enjoyable afternoon

20:00 Farewell Supper at a local restaurant (local seafood ((or alternative)), pasta, pizza, and of course wine!)

Day 09: Depart Italy for your return trip

We have enjoyed having you on our special wine and gastronomy tour of Southern Italy. Services end after breakfast. Transfer from Sorrento to the airport (optional upon request)
