Livorno, the Tuscan gateway to the Mediterranean Sea, is crossed by canals and situated by the sea. Planned as an ideal town in the 16th century, Livorno reveals its history through its districts characterised by the Medicean canals, which are still navigable, and through its port, overlooked by towers and fortresses, leading to the town centre. Today the port is still very active and features a large fishing fleet plus an abundance of commercial activity. Thanks to the 16th Century Livornine laws that helped the trading activities of merchants and also gave freedom of religion, Livorno became a cosmopolitan city and one of the most important ports of the entire Mediterranean area.
