Highlights of Palermo and Monreale

In a stroll through the old town we get to know the historical centre of Palermo — with the baroque Quattro Canti square, the picturesque Piazza Pretoria and the delightful medival churches La Martorana and San Cataldo. This is followed be the colourful Ballarò market, where we can taste delicious «pannelle». After this we visit the Royal palace of the Norman kings with the beautiful Palatine Chapel. After this, we take a taxi to the neighbouring «royal» town of Monreale, visiting the magnificent Norman cathedral with its impressive Byzantine mosaics. In the enchanted cloister of the former Benedictine monastry we will try to decipher the mysterious metaphorical language of the column's capitals.
