Palermo is the chief town of Sicily, the name derived from the Greek 'Panormus' — meaning 'All Port'. Castello della Zisa is one of the only remaining monuments to the decadence of Moorish Palermo. See the muqarnas vaults and admire the latticework windows, fountains and the wind chamber which protected the emir's family from the hot African wind. The villa’s name comes from the Arabic al aziz, meaning 'magnificent'. Today it houses a museum of Arabic crafts, the main features of which are some superbly crafted screens and a stunning twelfth-century bronze basin. Visit the beautiful Orto Botanico in the vicinity of Palermo University. These botanical gardens aid the scientific and education facility of the University. Stroll along the paths which weave through huge banyan trees, palms, plants and picturesque ponds; a leafy haven of tranquillity. Nature lovers will also appreciate the beautiful Giadino Inglese (English Garden), with its variety of plant life, greenhouses, fabulous fountains and sculptures which are scattered throughout the garden. Take the bus tour to Villa Malfitano, which is set in exquisite grounds where rare plants are cultivated. The manor house itself is home to collections of china, paintings, tapestries and furniture.
